What is included when a studio builds your app?
A build worth paying for arrives as a working product on every surface it was promised on, with the source code handed over and the apps in the stores. The First Build names those as terms of the contract: a Web App, an iPhone App, an Android App, the Source Code, and the Launch.
What does the product itself cover?
Three surfaces, built from one scope: a web application, an iPhone app and an Android app. Somebody who signs up on a laptop and then opens their phone finds the same account, the same data and the same product.
What the scope names is what gets built. The product is the one imagined at the start, at full size, rather than a reduced version of it with the rest kept for later.
The finish is the part that is hard to specify and easy to feel. A product that has to be explained before it can be used has moved its own work onto the person using it, and that shows up in whether anybody comes back on the second day.
Who owns the source code?
The buyer, and the handover is a deliverable rather than a request. Source Code is one of the terms the contract defines, which gives it a date and an owner instead of a policy.
Ownership decides who is able to change the product later. Code that has been handed over can be maintained by the studio that wrote it, by an in-house engineer, or by whoever the business hires in two years.
It also matters at the moments a business rarely plans for. An acquirer, an investor or an auditor asks what the company owns, and a product counts as an asset when its code does.
What does launch mean here?
Submission to the App Store and to Google Play, with the listings, the assets and the review requirements handled by the team that built the product. It sits inside the 90 days rather than after them.
Store review is its own discipline. Both stores publish requirements about privacy, account deletion, permissions and payment, and a build that meets them was designed to meet them.
The web application goes live the same way, on a domain the business owns.
What arrives after the launch?
The operating systems move twice a year, the libraries underneath move more often, and the stores revise their requirements on their own schedule. Maintenance in this market is quoted at 15% to 20% of the build price a year.
That is true of any build from any studio, and it belongs in the first budget. Owning the code is what leaves the choice of who does that work open.
Everything sent to the studio stays private, and the service agreement defines ownership of the product, the project assets and the production code before the work begins.
